Rup .Tured is a new direction for the artist in exploring the implications of destroying and rebuilding a surface. These paintings layer weeks in time into a single piece. Oil paint—traditionally a mere addition to a surface—here becomes the base structure itself. Over long cycles of exposure to fire, rupturing, tearing, the paint fragments in uniquely damaged ways.
These pieces are a way to think about things that have been so broken they cannot be repaired. They are an end result of destruction you cannot return from. But that destruction has revealed the paint, creating textures and patterns impossible to find when oil paint is simply a medium of expression.
Is there a peace in this ravaged beauty, too? Can something shattered still be whole? The circles of birth and rebirth that created this series have disintegrated the surface. But in the forms and colors that have emerged—writing the history of the paint in ragged edges—lies something fresh and raw and gorgeous.
