Fragments and Residues

This series examines the results of the fortuitous creation of fragments from a process of tearing. The products: fragments, pieces, remnants and residues prompt the viewer to ask questions surrounding the identity of a fragment. It forces the artist to confront the problem of deciding what is kept and what is discarded. A fragment serves as a reminder that the whole it was once part of. However, one can never be sure of exactly what constitutes a remnant or a leftover. According to Jorge Luis Borges, the whole world consists of tiny objects, mimicking the appearance of leftover parts that evoke not a missing whole as much as a universe of fragments.

Oil paint is repetitively layered over weeks, transformed into skins over time. Later, they are removed from their supports by fire and gravity. These remnants are further manipulated and presented in different ways to create works that are often not only sensuously painterly but also sculptural and object-based in nature. They shift between tensions of one form to another as materiality of oil paint is manipulated and transformed.
